QUEENS, N.Y. (May 13, 2011) ? Led by former St. John’s men’s basketball captain Tyrone Grant, Brooklyn-based non-profit organization “Team First” is scheduled to operate a basketball-related seminar at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn on Saturday, May 14, at 8:30 a.m.
Team First will host approximately 80 area youth in a series of clinics, games and educational seminars.
“Team First’s May 14 event will introduce its services to the NYC community, while addressing the critically important message of academic achievement,” said Grant. “We expect to host children, guest coaches, parents and several persons that represent the local leadership community during this event.”
Team First Inc. is a Brooklyn based non-profit 503(c) (3) corporation that merges the passion for the game of basketball held by inner-city children and young New York City cooperate professionals in an innovative mentorship program. The organization seeks to solve the academic achievement gap in New York City by emotionally, physically and intellectually connecting youth between the ages of six and 18 with successful, young volunteer mentors who have accomplished careers in a number of fields, while balancing a heavy interest in basketball. Team First has developed several different strategies and programs to establish these connections, while also strongly promoting the game of basketball.
The athletic division of Team First’s executive staff consists exclusively of experienced former professional basketball athletes such as Grant, who starred for the Red Storm from 1996-99, and still ranks 10th all-time at St. John’s with a .537 career field goal percentage and 14th in school history with 750 career rebounds. Other divisions are comprised of experts in the fields of law and education and sophisticated digital advertising professionals.
