On Friday, the RedStormReport.com got a chance to chat with St. John's head coach Steve Lavin about the latest edition to his coaching staff Darrick Martin. "Good pick up," he said.

As mentioned in the St. John's press release, in addition to hiring Martin, Lavin promoted current assistant coaches Rico Hinds and Tony Chiles. Clarifying the what the new hire and promotions, Lavin said, " moved up Rico and Tony...hired Darrick Martin to complete staff."

In describing Martin's coaching style, Coach Lavin said that the former NBA player has a "patient teaching style" and "imparts good info as a teacher."

Ask whether Martin was hired to as an X and O guy similar to former STJ assistant coach Mike Dunlap, Lavin responded, "Ive never hired that way. just look for the best fit; most qualified and best fit given the juncture of [a] particular hire." Dunlap now works as head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats of the NBA.

"Naturally, [Gene] Keady has been my mainstay as an X and O guy with his 900 wins and 50+ years of experience," said Lavin. "With my 25 years in the business; Rico, TC and Darrick, we cover all the bases."
